Specialty Exam
NERB is no longer accepting applications for the July 2012 Specialty Exam being held in Chicago, Illinois. Please revisit this website in late January 2013 to request an application for the July 2013 Specialty Exam.
NERB administers examinations for the state of Illinois and states in the Western Regional Dental Testing Service in seven specialty areas:
Endodontics
Orthodontics
Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology
Pediatric Dentistry
Periodontics
Prosthodontics
These examinations are not designed to replace the specialty boards, but to qualify successful applicants to practice and to advertise themselves as specialists in the states participating in this specialty examination process.
The examination is being offered July 10, 11 and 12, 2012 at the University of Illinois, College of Dentistry in Chicago.
The examination consists of two parts:
- A written multiple choice examination of 160 to 180 questions and
- Presentation of a series of cases completed by the candidate demonstrating specific treatment planning and technical skills.
Your completed cases and signed, notarized affidavit must be received no later than, Monday, May 21, 2012.

A score of 75% or better is required in both parts to pass. If you receive a passing score from the American Board in your specialty, the written part of the NERB exam can be waived, as long as a copy of the scores are received by the IDFPR .
