Information
The NERB has prepared in cooperation with Prometric a demonstration of the computer based examination for Dental Hygienists and Dentists. This demo was not designed to be a study tool (contains no actual exam material), only to introduce the candidate to the format of the examination.
Instructions for Downloading and Installation
The instructions below were written for computers running Microsoft Windows, your individual machine may differ slightly. If you are running Windows XP and get a message warning you about running the file click ok and proceed to install the demo.
It is strongly suggested that you print this page for your reference as you download and install the demo. (Basic PC knowledge is assumed).
Create a new folder and name it DSE Demo (create the folder anywhere on your computer as long as you can remember how to navigate to it).
Right click on the file below that you wish to download and choose "Save Target As..." or "Save As...".
When the “save as” window opens, navigate to the DSE folder you just created and save the file in that folder.
When the download is complete select “open folder”
You should now see the dsedemo.exe icon.
(if you don’t see the .exe extension you need to turn off/uncheck “Hide extensions for known file types”. To do that, in file explorer under the Tools menu select Folder Options, Click the View Tab, under files and folders uncheck “Hide extensions to know file types” and click ok.)
Next double click the dsedemo.exe. (Select "Run" if you see an Open File – Security Warning) This will extract numerous files into that folder.
Locate the “setup.exe” file (there are a few setup files so you need to be able to view the file extension .exe, see above for instructions) and double click it. This will begin the demo installation.
From here you can follow the instructions that are included with the demo. It's easiest if you don't change any of the settings and simply click on the next button at the bottom of the screen until it changes to the finish button then click it.
The demo will now start automatically. If once you are finished with the demo you can run it again by clicking on the icon on your desktop!
Note: The screen resolution for the demo must be set to 800 x 600 256 colors. To check to see if your screen resolution is correct or to change it right click your mouse on any empty spot on your desktop and then click on Properties with the left mouse button. Once the Display Properties windows opens choose Settings from the tabs at the top. Once you have chosen Settings be sure the "Screen Area" in the lower left corner of this window is set to 800 by 600 Pixels. If it is just choose close, it it's not change the resolution by dragging the slider to the left till it says 800 by 600 Pixels and the clicking on ok, then ok again, then yes.

486 or higher processor, Microsoft Windows 3.1, 95, 98, NT or XP, 8 meg of ram, 5 meg of hard-disk space for the DSCE demo, 4 meg of hard-disk space for the CSCE demo, resolution of 800 x 600 256 colors, mouse
NERB does not have any plans at this time to develop a version of the demo that will run any other computer platform or operating system.
